Permanent lips: what people ask most

Violetta Shumskaya

Watercolour lips and contour are the second most popular topic. Colour, cold sores, healing and «what if the shade is not mine» — below. Treatments and prices are on the watercolour lips page.

Ten honest answers

What is «water lipstick»?

It is a technique of dense yet natural tone: the lips look tinted with a well-groomed shade rather than outlined. Pigment is spread evenly across the whole surface with no hard border. It differs from the classic contour tattoos of past years both visually and in how the result feels — there is no dark frame that ages the face.

Is it true that lips heal harder than brows?

The lip tissue is more mobile and moist, so healing feels brighter: swelling on the first day, scabs, light tightness. In terms of timing it is the same five to seven days until peeling; the final colour is judged after a month. The swelling subsides within the first days and that is the least comfortable part — after that, only patience.

Why does the lip colour look completely different after the procedure?

Fresh work is always brighter and cooler than the final result. After peeling up to thirty per cent of the intensity goes away, warm shades «open up» gradually, and the skin under the pigment adds its own tone. That is why watercolour lips are judged only in the fourth week: what you see in the mirror in the first days is an intermediate state, not the result. Assessing the shade earlier is pointless — which is exactly why the touch-up is scheduled a month later.

Can I have permanent lips if I get cold sores?

If you get cold sores regularly, say so before booking: the procedure provokes flare-ups, and no work is done on an active outbreak — no competent artist would. A preventive course of antivirals is usually recommended beforehand — prescribed by a doctor, not by the artist. This honest warning is a sign of a careful approach, not of excessive caution: a flare-up lived through on the lips spoils both the result and the weeks after it.

How is the shade chosen?

Starting from your natural lip colour and skin undertone: a warm nude suits one person, a cool pink another. The aim of permanent makeup is not «any lipstick forever» but your own healthy lips at their best. If you want a bright evening look, it is easier to achieve with ordinary lipstick over a calm base.

Can lips be made to look bigger?

A small correction of volume and asymmetry — yes, through contour and tone. A radical change of size is not possible with pigment, and an honest artist does not promise it: there is a line beyond which the work looks unnatural. If volume is the goal, that is a question for aesthetic medicine; pigment solves colour and shape.

How long do permanent lips last?

Usually a year and a half to two years — longer than the hair-stroke technique and comparable to powder brows. Lip tissue is mobile and moist, and pigment gradually comes out — that is normal, as is fading from smoking, sun and aggressive peels. A supporting procedure once every year to eighteen months keeps the colour fresh without building up intensity — so watercolour lips are refreshed when the shade has noticeably lightened, not by the calendar.

Can I have beauty injections and treatments over permanent lips?

Yes, but with pauses: injections and hardware treatments — not before full healing, and you tell the cosmetologist about the pigment. Some acids and laser procedures noticeably «knock out» colour. The schedule is agreed between your permanent-makeup artist and cosmetologist — one team, not rivals.

Are there lifestyle limits before and after?

The day before — no alcohol or vasodilating treatments; on the day — no coffee or energy drinks, they visibly change how pigment settles. The first week — no baths, pools, long sun or aggressive cosmetics on the lips. Kissing and spicy food are also limited in the first days: the tissue needs rest. It is a short seven-day list, not «a new life» — but it is exactly what decides the colour after healing.

What if I do not like the result?

This is exactly why the sketch and shade are agreed before the work begins, and the month-later touch-up is part of the procedure, not an upsell. A fresh result cannot be redone radically — the skin needs to heal. Full removal of pigment is possible, but it means separate procedures and months; it is simpler never to reach that point by discussing wishes in advance, as concretely as possible.
